Ranney (1871 1939) was a trained architect and educator, graduating from Kemper Hall Academy in Kenosha, Wisconsin, attended classes at the newly established University of Chicago, and taught at the University School for Girls in Chicago. In 1904, at the age of 34, she moved to Pasadena, where she was a teacher as well as a draftsman for the famous Greene & Greene
